You have to be 18 to enter into a legal contract. So you have to be 18 to rent. However, if you are emancipated from your parents (more trouble than its worth, unless your parents are really that abusive), you might have a sympathetic property manager that would rent to you. But renting is also based on credit, and at 16, I doubt you have any.
Someone over 18 would have to sign the lease for you. Of course if you are emancipated by the courts, you have a right to rent, BUT no apartment leasing company or apartment manager is going to rent to you under your name alone, because if you moved in and didnt pay the rent, or wanted to evict you or anything, the contract is no good because you must be 18 for a contract to be legal in court.
If you are that determined to move on your own, you will have to find someone over 18 to sign the lease. The owners of the apartment need to be able to hold someone responsible for the premesis and at 16, you cant be in a legal contract.
