If it is a Direct Debit, then you are protected under the Banking ‘Direct Debit Guarantee’ system.
All you have to do is phone your bank, tell them the situation, and they will immediately ‘claw’ it back from the receiving bank account.
Should only take a day or so for the money to credit back into your account.
In the US, they mistake is usually corrected by the next business day. It happened to me. That’s the chances you take then they can access your account. If anything bounces because of it, they have to pay the fee. Make sure they are aware of it and the bank knows, too.
Adam B is right. Call your bank and they will get i back for you. You sre protected with direct debits under something called a direct debit indemnity. This basically means if you haven’t agreed the amount that has been taken, you can claim it back through your bank, don’t bother waiting for the cheque for 4 weeks, you can get it in a few days!!
