We rented the same place for almost 3 years, and during the split, some of the rent went behind. Now I am keeping the apartment and he wants to ditch the back rent and wants me to pay him for 1/2 the security deposit. Is this legal??

Goed geluk.
Judge Judy would make him pay it.
it all depends on your agreement. if the rent was 50/50 & the security deposit is the same, then you are entitled to reimbursement from him. this is something that’d be negotiated between your lawyers.
He is obviously responsible for 1/2 of the rent while he was living there.. Don’t give him any money.. are you taking applications for your next husband?
