I’ve heard you need steel doors, fire alarms, many things to make it fire code to legally have renters. Is this true? Please post links.

your regular house doors will do fine. one working fire alarm is required.
a back door that works
that’s it
AC that works
windows that work
If you are putting a second unit in a house in order to meet code it needs to have fire doors between the units, interconnected fire alarms, and half inch dry wall on adjacent walls/ceilings. There are also requirements with regard to exits.
For any dwelling you need a smoke detector per level and a carbon monoxide detector.
Sorry I don’t have any links but you can go to your local fire station and ask them. I don’t know if these rules apply everywhere in Canada, they do in Toronto.
