It is going to be inconvenient for a few days but well worth it at the end.
We have just had 3 weeks of it when the council modernised our kitchen. It was messy but the chaps doing it were friendly and very helpful. They did extras for us, so I would ask about the fireplace.
Now it looks fantastic. Let them do it, you'll be glad you did.

Assuming your still under lease, I would have thought they had to find you another place to live and help with moving and storage expenses.

It sounds like they are bullying you, you need to get ferm legal advice and throw your rights as a tenant at them, with cases like this knowledge is power, they know they are breaking the law, because they know you will fold and just do as they say, stand up for your rights and make them treat you with the respect you deserve.

Legal action probably isnt nesseccary, just make them make the whole situation more bearable for you, when you move back into a better place you will be glad it all happened and its all over.

Having just had all this done, i think it was worth it.
As for electrics being of the have to leave one
plug on and all lighting must be on same day,
my daughter who has two kids had to put up with this for
3 weeks.
Dust sheet and floor and carpet protection must be supplied
by the contractors, they must also renew or put back
all that they remove such as your fire, they must also fit
smoke alarms, 2.If they remove plaster from walls and they renew it,
they have to decorate it or give you a decorating grant.
Take photos of your home and belongings before they start, also remove
all expensive items, watches, jewelry, and thing you know will
be damaged by dust,TV hi fi.You will not be able to stop in the house for at least a day if they rewire, the dust is that bad.
To end i will also say you can refuse to have it done as many
have done in my area.Good Luck.

Talk to the Citizens Advice Bureau or your local council housing department, I think they would have to re-house you if you're going to be without electricity for that long but you need to check where you stand legally.
Good luck
