Very briefly, because they then consume no extra resources. Right now an average house in a developed country consumes about 6,000KW/h of electrical energy per year. The world is growing so quickly that literally millions of new houses are built each year, which in turn means much more energy needs to be created, which right now still means fossil fuels which are both finite AND contributing to global warming.
On the other hand, houses that are energy self-reliant use NO net energy. At all. That means a BILLION houses could be built each year and not a single KW/h of extra electrical capacity would be needed.
And the really amazing thing is that energy self-reliant houses are very easy to achieve. In fact I’m sitting in one right now while typing this.
By the way I should stress that we’re only taking about operating energy of houses here. There’s still energy and resources required to build/improve them. But this embodied energy can also be ‘paid off’ over the lifetime of a truly sustainable house.
Hope that helps
